Rand Snell Instrumental Compositions

Hammerhead | University of Maryland Percussion Ensemble
Eric Plewinski, Robby Bowen, Arielle Miller, Logan Seith. | Hammerhead was written for four percussionists, each of whom play one pitched and three unpitched instruments. Much of the piece features offset and shifting rhythmic patterns that produce a cumulative, driving effect, somewhat in the style of early Lou Harrison. The opening and intervening melodic sections, in contrast, feel somewhat suspended in time. The title is the name of a shark common in Florida waters; a play on the nature of percussion music in general; and a nod to Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29, Op. 106.
