    • I said a quiet goodbye to Ella Friday, telling her I loved her like my mother had loved her. She had suffered a massive stroke three weeks ago, then another while in the ICU, and although I would like to believe she heard me, she lay quiet and unresponsive.

Ella died the next morning. She was 78 years old.

Ella saved my mother’s life in the difficult days following my mother’s emergency abdominal surgery, at age 92. She and my mother had bonded when my mother needed occasional overnight care in the months before. In the hospital Ella kept my mother cleaned and turned, oriented with her soft voice. She could get my mother to eat when no one else could, to take her medicine, to keep going when my mother wanted to let go.

Her hard years working in nursing homes had given her a unique set of caregiving skills. But what mattered most was the friendship of these two women who understood and respected and loved each other.

Ella loved me too. She understood how hard it was to manage the responsibility I had and how lonely I was during those long years. Every Christmas she had presents for me, as well as my mother. She was a generous, giving person.

When my mother died three years ago, at 99, it was hard on Ella.

I stayed in touch with Ella and all my mother’s caregivers. They are family, and we share experiences no one else can understand. Ella called regularly, just to make sure I was behaving myself. Which I mostly was.

Sending much love to Ella’s children Lawrence and Maxine, and all her grandchildren.
    • My cousin Zac and his husband, Nick, got in Thursday night from Huntsville and we didn’t waste a minute. They got the full Tampa Bay experience, with great fun and food on all sides of the Bay. Thanks to Tim, Will and Cam for a great dinner out Friday night and to Tim for the art walk crawl and dinner (pictured) last night. And to Sean for being Sean. Awesome family, awesome friends. And some great food and spectacular weather. The condo feels empty tonight. #family #friends
