    • April Blog: The Abstract Art of Spring This spring I hope to get past a traumatic 2023 assault. After almost three years in jail, my assailant should finally face trial. I and other victims are ready to testify and accept the outcome, whatever that may be. Some of us have been the target of intimidation and defamation attacks, including on social media. Mine began with threatening phone calls shortly after his arrest in May 2023 and picked up again the past few months. Police and DA are aware of this ongoing campaign to dissuade our testimony. It won’t work. We will testify. In the studio, I keep meaning to do one thing and end up with another. In other words, pieces are finding their own way despite me. It’s humbling and inspiring to see how little my own ego has to do with the work that speaks best. I continue to recover slowly from a heart infection, with progress expected not in weeks but over many months or even years. Infections and other complications have delayed recovery from a recent, unrelated surgery. To be honest, this is a very difficult time and I think that is reflected in my art. But it’s also a hopeful time. Art representing spring has sometimes shocked; think of the Paris riot that allegedly ensued from the premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring in 1913. I don’t expect riots over my new work. But a new direction is getting clearer. Sometimes Magic Out of my recent emotional crucible came a real gift, a piece I call Sometimes Magic. It’s a layered, colorful piece with an inner glow. I don’t want to say much more than that. It’s special, a hopeful statement in dark times. It’s the companion piece to another that I finished later, and will show next month. Time Travel This was another gift, an experiment in extended loops created with tape and spray acrylic. Like life, time is not linear. It speeds and slows, intensifies and retreats. It is a unique and personal experience for every sentient being.     • Dave, 86 and a retired United Captain, was about four miles south of the Albert Whitted Airport when his experimental airplane shuddered. He maintained control with differential power, aileron and rudder, not knowing he had lost the top surface of his left wing. Dave called the tower and returned to land on Runway 36. It wasn’t until he parked, got out and inspected the plane that he discovered the fabric had ripped off the ribs and torn away completely. It seems wings can generate quite a bit of lift even missing their upper surface in the low-pressure area aft of the leading edge. #aviation #aerodynamics #pilot #eaa #aopa
