  • I arrived in Buenos Aires the morning of September 26, at last in the city I dreamed of visiting for a long time. Over the next two weeks I’ll be taking daily Spanish classes and absorbing all I can from the culture of this beautiful, absorbing metropolis. I’ll return with lots of new material and new ideas. I left as Hurricane Helene was approaching the Tampa Bay area. Thanks to neighbors and friends, I know that my home and possessions are ok. But I know that many other people are not, as this massive storm caused a surge of water that inundated the barrier islands and low-lying areas around Tampa Bay. The death toll keeps rising there, and in the flooded mountain areas of Georgia and the Carolinas. This was a humbling reminder that those of us in St. Petersburg and Tampa live in the most vulnerable metropolitan area of the US. This storm was the region’s most catastrophic in over 100 years, and yet the center of the storm, and strongest winds, were at their closest 100 miles away. I’ll go back in a few weeks to a changed city. Before I left, I met with Congresswoman Kathy Castor, who has taken an interest in the unprecedented aeromedical delays that I and thousands of other pilots are experiencing from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).   • The last time I had this view of the Mississippi River flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, I was flying my Mu-2 to California, in January 2023. I didn’t get to fly it back that trip, after the assault. Today’s flight was courtesy of United; I left early for Houston, ahead of Hurricane Helene, to catch tonight’s overnight to Buenos Aires. Helene had some outer bands under us, and it was a choppy ride. #gulfofmexico #helene #aviation
